First step towards Tokyo

Tom Vanhove is an experienced Belgian goalball player who have represented his country for example twice in the Paralympics.

"As a Belgium team we’ve always been a steady nation in European goalball. Unfortunately we have never hit the podium on a major IBSA A Championship. Our top achievement have been qualifying for the Beijing 2018 and London 2012 Paralympics.

After London we made some changes to the team and tried to return to the same level as before. We got back to a decent level but missed out for the qualification for the Rio 2016 Paralympics. That didn’t mean we stopped progressing, though. Some new players were added to the roster and some other players evolved to a higher level. In 2016 this resulted in a 4th place in the pre-Rio tournament and to a bronze medal in the 2017 Pajulahti Games.

Our focus is now on the Tokyo 2020 games. This starts with qualifying for the 2018 World Championships. This will be our main focus in the 2017 European Championships.

On a personal level I’m focusing on Tokyo 2020 too as it will be a major point in my career. It will mark a 15-year career at the highest goalball level so I hope to make the best of it."

There will be total of 22 blog texts published in the Pajulahti 2017 blog, one text every week until the 2017 IBSA Goalball European Championships on 18–22 of September. Each week there will be a different writer. New blog text will be published every Wednesday.
